Paediatric Department – Children’s Centre – Dorset County Hospital

The Paediatric Department is based in the Children’s Centre in an adjacent building to Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester. We provide and house NHS out-patient health services for children and young people. Dorset County Hospital provides acute/emergency health care via their Accident & Emergency Department, and the children’s ward (Kingfisher Ward). Palliative Care services are also offered, and this is in partnership with Poole Hospital, the local hospices (Naomi House, Julia’s House), and the palliative care team at Southampton hospital.

Service Details

Additional Information
The hospital operates an out of hours answer machine. Access to out-of-hours medical care is via the usual way (GP, 111, 999, A&E, etc) unless the child has been given a designated temporary or long term Open Access arrangement to Kingfisher Ward. We also provide general paediatric clinics in Blandford Hospital, Weymouth Community Hospital, Bridport Hospital, Royal Manor Health Centre (Portland). Our general paediatricians each cover a designated geographical patch, and also manage aspects of community paediatrics within their patch. Tertiary specialists are involved where required. There are also good clinical network links with Southampton and Bristol.
Referral information
Referrals are accepted from Health Professionals, generally from General Practitioners (GP) but also health visitors and school nursing. Parts of our service receive referrals from other agencies such as Social Services and Education. Referrals will be internally directed to the most appropriate team within the department depending on what information is given. In some situations, management advice will be given back to the referrer instead of offering a face-to-face clinic appointment. Service users should be registered with a Dorset GP, but out of area referrals may be considered on a case by case basis.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Local Offer

Support for children and young people with SEN and disabilities
The core Diagnostic team accept referrals where there are concerns about communication, social interaction, inflexibility, unpredictable/difficult behaviour, difficulty with daily tasks and where clarity is needed about whether there is an underlying developmental problem that affects the child's learning and behaviour; this includes assessments for Autism/Asperger’s. Where the neurodevelopmental problems or disabilities are more complex, or more specialist assessment and management is required, these children will be referred to, or have their paediatric care shared with the community paediatricians.
