People First Dorset

People First Dorset is a user-led charity supporting people with learning disabilities to speak up and lead change. Projects include the Friendship Club, a club for adults with learning disabilities (18+) where people can safely enjoy social events, friendship and fun in their local community. We also run a Young Friendship Club for young people with additional needs and disabilities, aged 15-19. Our Speaking Up groups support adults with learning disabilities to speak up about the things which are important to them. Some of this is fed back into our Forum project, which is the vehicle by which the voices of people with learning disability and complex needs are heard at a strategic level. We represent people at a range of Local Authority and other meetings. The aim is to identify issues that affect people in their everyday life, and we use our networks and contacts to make this change for the better.

Additional Information
People First Dorset also run a Quality Check project. Quality checking is important as it can show how good services are. It helps to make sure services are supporting people with learning disabilities to lead full, safe and active lives. The Quality Checking team judge the quality of the services against a set of standards. Then they report what they found. They might make suggestions about how things could improve and make people’s lives better. We work with people with learning disabilities to turn difficult documents into easy read. Please contact us for more information on any of our projects. Respite / Short Break.
