Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Local Offer

Support for children and young people with SEN and disabilities

All members of staff have received training on the SEN code of practice and on how best to support children within their classes. Additionally, different members of staff have had training related to aspects of SEND, according to their role or the needs of the children they are working with. These have included sessions on: • How to support children on the autistic spectrum. • How to support children with social and emotional needs. • How to support children with speech and language difficulties. • How to support children with physical and co-ordination needs. Mrs Lowe and Mrs White have also completed the Speech and Language qualification (September 2014), enabling them to help identify and support children with these needs. Miss King and Mrs Hickman have completed their ELSA qualification and work with children across the school (October 2014). We are able to offer individual pastoral support in a nurturing environment outside the classroom. At times it may be necessary to receive more specialised expertise from outside agencies. The agencies used by the school include: SENSS, the Locality Team (Social Care), Educational Psychologist (EP), Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), Dorset Children and Families Counselling Trust (DCFCT), Attendance Manager , Speech & Language Therapy Service (SALT), Occupational Therapy (OT - based at Poole hospital), Hearing Support Service and the school nurse. Staff at Swanage Primary are deployed depending on individual circumstances. Additional support or resources are dependent on individual children's needs. Additional provision will be allocated after discussions with the class teacher. Decisions regarding additional provision are made with yourselves as parents, the class teacher, the SENCO and Senior Leadership Team (the Headteacher and Deputies). Decisions are made based on termly tracking of the children, discussions between staff and parents, and as a result of assessments from outside agencies.
