Department Of Sexual Health: Royal Bournemouth Hospital

We are a ‘Young People Friendly’, confidential service offering testing and treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections, HIV and other genital conditions and issues affecting sexual health, as well as advice around sexual health promotion, risk reduction and STI prevention. We have specialist health advisers that provide on-going support for young people including health promotion and safer sex advice, emergency contraception, one-to one behaviour change interventions including alcohol brief intervention and signposting to other relevant services. Our main service is at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital but we also hold a weekly satellite clinic at Poole Town Medical Centre, a community Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) clinic at ‘Over the Rainbow’ in Bournemouth and an STI screening service at The Shores (the Dorset Sexual Assault Referral Centre).

Additional Information
Our service is open access, available to anyone 13 years old and above, regardless of postcode. The service is available all year round and we have an out of hours answer machine if you ring 01202 704536. If messages are left on the answer machine, they will not be responded to until the next working day. Urgent problems should be directed to the GP out of hours service. GPs have access to an on-call Consultant in Sexual Health 7 days a week via Royal Bournemouth Hospital Switchboard. We offer Language line, a telephone translation service to facilitate consultations when English is not a patient’s first language.
Referral information
Professional and self-referral. We recommend that children under 13 years old are seen by paediatricians, whom we work closely with when appropriate. Check out the younger people section on our website for information around confidentiality and links to useful resources. We currently book appointments a week in advance but have our 'same day service' which is a text based system that allows patients to be seen on the day. You will also find information about what to expect when you come to our clinic under the heading 'your patient journey' on our website.
