Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Local Offer

Support for children and young people with SEN and disabilities
At St Gregory’s we have high expectations and aspirations for all our children, whatever their ability or need. It is important to us that our children feel valued as part of the school and wider community. Through appropriate provision we respect that children: • Have different educational, social, emotional and physical needs • Require different approaches to learning to succeed. At St Gregory’s we provide support to our children through the four areas of need laid out in the SEN Code of Practice 2014: • Communication and Interaction (speech and language, ASD) • Cognition and Learning (Moderate and specific learning difficulties – dyslexia / dyspraxia) • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (ADHD, Attachment disorder) • Sensory, Medical and Physical needs (Hearing / vision / sensory impairment). At St Gregory’s we follow a graduated approach to assessing, identifying and providing for pupils with SEN. If, despite interventions, a child continues to make significantly slower progress than that of their peers starting at the same baseline, or a child fails to match their previous rate of progress, our school SENCO will place them on the SEN register. This will follow discussions with parents / carers and relevant school staff. Children who are identified as having SEN might be assessed through the following ways: •Feedback from teaching staff / classroom assistants / observations / internal tests • Information from previous settings eg nurseries / pre-school / previous primary • Assessment of reading/ spelling/ maths through our school internal termly testing • Assessments from external agencies for example Behaviour support / Educational psychologist / Speech and language / SENSS / CAHMS.
