Additional Information
Following referral (see further below), you and your child will be invited to an assessment session. At your first and following appointments, we try to make all our sessions fun for the children. For further information on what happens during the assessment and follow-up appointments, what therapists expect of parents/carers and our safeguarding policy, please ring us or see our website. For children accessing our service and approaching 15 years of age, we begin the transition process. We encourage older children to be more independent and manage their own therapy needs. We provide information regarding local sport, clubs and leisure facilities your child may wish to access. We also work very closely with your child's school or college attending meetings and writing reports regarding their individual requirements if clinically appropriate. Finally, we organise a handover meeting with adult therapists if this is appropriate. We are an NHS service and do not offer private appointments. The Service operates all year. Messages can be left on the answering machine out of hours. We are based in the Children’s Centre which is a separate building adjacent to the main hospital. We also run some clinics from Sturminster Newton Medical Centre and The Bridges Medical Centre, Weymouth.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Local Offer

Support for children and young people with SEN and disabilities
Our Occupational Therapists (OTs, Physiotherapists and Dietitians are fully qualified Allied Health Professionals with extensive post-graduate training in paediatrics. They are all members of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Our team includes assistants who work under the supervision of the therapists. We are employed by the NHS to provide physical therapies (including advice and guidance) for children and young people with a range of physical impairments and disorders and who are registered with a GP within the Dorset County Hospital (DCH) catchment area. The service does not provide therapy for conditions related to a primary diagnosis around mental health and challenging behaviours (these children would usually be seen by Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service or the Challenging Behaviour Service).
