Acute Paediatrics Service - Poole Hospital

The Children's Unit cares for children and young people from 0 to 18 years, providing comprehensive nursing care for children with medical and surgical needs and orthopaedic conditions. We provide an integrated service for children and families across East Dorset and Bournemouth, offering expert paediatric treatment and assessment for children referred via the Emergency Departments at both Bournemouth and Poole Hospitals, General Practitioners (GPs), Midwifery and Out of Hours Services. Neonatal care is provided for babies born at Poole and Bournemouth Maternity Units and referrals are accepted from neighbouring districts needing intensive, high dependency or special care. The hospital web site will direct you to acute inpatient paediatric services, adolescent provision, assessment and day care, Child Development Centre, children’s therapy team, community paediatric services, hospital therapy and school services.

Additional Information
24 hour free service, 7 days a week. Patients are seen by the on call consultant, or for complex cases they are allocated a named consultant. Treatment needs are discussed and implemented at first appointment. Communication by face to face and telephone contact, and treatment plan agreed. Service users should be registered with a Dorset GP, but out of area referrals are considered on case by case basis. Dorset County Hospital also provide Paediatrics. A1 Ward has seven beds in single rooms, with en-suite facilities providing isolation care. Ward facilities for families include a kitchen where parents can make hot drinks and snacks. Overnight accommodation, either beside your child’s bed or close by, can be provided for one parent or carer unless under exceptional circumstances, or agreed with senior staff. The school room is located here. Within A1 you will find Children’s High Dependency Unit (CHDU). B1 Ward is a 16-bedded ward providing care for children with a wide variety of conditions. There are cubicles to provide areas of isolation and a dedicated area to meet the needs of young people, from the ages of 12 to 16 years. B1 also has a play room for younger children and games room for teenagers.

For childrens safety. Access to the unit is restricted. Staff have swipe cards to access the unit and visitors are required to ring an intercom bell to gain access to the ward area they wish to visit. The bell is answered by nursing staff, and if they are busy with patients there may be a short wait until the bell is answered. Visitors will be asked via the intercom who it is they are visiting and then are given directions and buzzed through on to the unit. Patients attending for outpatient appointments need to come to the main reception desk where they will be directed to the appropriate areas for their appointment.

Support for children and young people with SEN and disabilities
Children with complex illness come under an open access system, giving them 24 hours accessibility to the service. Dedicated transitional care team within the hospital, consisting of child health and adult nurse and medical leads. Transition for children with complex illness commences from age 13 upwards, with a planned handover of care.
