Children's Therapy Service - Poole Hospital N.H.S.

We see children/young people aged 0 to 19 years, living across Poole, Bournemouth and East Dorset (including Swanage and Christchurch). The team consists of specialist paediatric occupational therapists, physiotherapists and therapy assistants. The therapists are responsible for the assessment and treatment of children and young people’s developmental, motor (fine and gross) and/or sensory difficulties. They are part of the pre-school multi-disciplinary diagnostic team and we work in the hospital, in children's homes, nurseries, pre-schools and schools.

Additional Information
Following referral (see referral info further below), you and your child will be invited to an assessment session. At your first and following appointments, we try to make all our sessions fun for the children. For further information on what happens during the assessment and follow-up appointments, what therapists expect of parents/carers and our safeguarding policy, please ring us or see our website. For children accessing our service and approaching 15 years of age, we begin our transition process. We encourage older children to be more independent and manage their own therapy needs. We provide information regarding local sport, clubs and leisure facilities your child may wish to access. We also work very closely with your child's school or college attending meetings and writing reports regarding their individual requirements. Finally, we organise a handover meeting with adult therapists if this is appropriate.
Referral information
All referrals are received via paediatricians (Consultant or community), neonatologists or school doctors. Infants and children who have difficulties with their motor skills (fine or gross) are referred to the service. These may be related to a specific diagnosis, motor skill delay or physical profile. Your child may be identified as having some functional difficulties e.g. with their play, dressing, feeding, crawling, sitting, standing or walking. Children with a diagnosis or who are undergoing a diagnosis of autism who have functional difficulties related to sensory processing are also seen. Your child's school or nursery may have noticed difficulties and referred your child to the school doctor with your permission. School staff who complete Learn to Move activities regularly with pupils in their school are able to refer to the children's therapy team directly.
